In 2021, Shi Haitao’s large-scale solo exhibition Backlight was held at Shanghai Powerlong Museum of Art, presenting a systematic overview of his creative achievements over the past decade. Featuring more than 50 oil paintings, video works and installations, the exhibition was structured around two core sections—Theatrical Pervasion and Slice Layering. It deconstructs reality through theatrical aesthetics to explore the profound propositions of the individual and the collective, life and power, and is hailed as “a unique sample of addressing the relationship between self and the world in the image age”.
Rooted in his profound theatrical background, Shi Haitao imbues contemporary real-life scenes such as military confrontations, cultural conflicts and theatre performances with the essence of Theatrical Pervasion, blurring the boundary between reality and drama and turning viewers from “onlookers” into “participants” in the scenes of the times, thus arousing in-depth reflection on reality. For Slice Layering, he takes medical sections and geographical contour lines as creative inspiration to dissect and reconstruct images of historical celebrities and classic figures in art history. Integrating flat painting and calligraphic brushwork, he veils familiar figures in a hazy “mist”, transforming them into a spectacular expression of the symbols of the times. Wang Min’an commented that Shi’s works embody three dramatic traits: infusing life with theatricality, turning the audience into performers, and rendering performers fictional. They break down the boundary between reality and drama, letting the conflicting spirit of drama permeate life itself.
In Backlight, video works depicting the remains of fragile lives stand in stark contrast to the portrait series, metaphorizing the alienation of individuals under the discipline of power and revealing sincere care for all living beings. Shi Haitao elevates his personal social experience into a universal collective human experience, constructing a triple theatre that strikes at the core of “biopolitics” in modern society. His works interpret literary and philosophical classics, respond to the spiritual predicaments of contemporary society, and leave ample room for viewers’ reflection through an open-ended expression. This exhibition is a concentrated presentation of his artistic ideas and creative methods, and more importantly, a profound dialogue where the artist captures truth against the light of the times, prompting viewers to re-examine the relationship between self and the world.
2021年,石海涛大型个展《逆光》于上海宝龙美术馆举办,系统呈现其近十年创作成果。展览汇集50余件油画、影像、装置作品,以剧场弥漫与切片层叠两大板块展开,借戏剧美学解构现实,探讨个体与集体、生命与权力的深层命题,被誉为“图像时代处理自我与世界关系的独特样本”。
石海涛依托其深厚戏剧积淀,让当下的军事对峙、文化冲突、剧场观演等现实场景在“剧场弥漫”,模糊现实与戏剧的边界,使观者从“旁观者”成为时代场景的“参与者”,唤起对现实的深度反思;以医学切片、地理学等高线为“切片层叠”,对历史名人、美术史经典形象进行切片重组,融合平涂与书法式书写,让熟知形象隐入“迷雾”,化作时代符号的奇观化表达。汪民安评其作品兼具三重戏剧性特质:让生活充满戏剧性、让观众成为演员、让演员成为虚构,拆毁现实与戏剧的边界,让冲突的戏剧精神浸入生活。
《逆光》中,微弱生命残骸影像与肖像作品形成鲜明对照,隐喻权力规训下的个体异化,流露对芸芸众生的生命关照。石海涛将个人社会经历升华为人类共通的集体经验,构建三重剧场,直指现代社会“生命政治”核心。作品解读文学、哲学经典,回应当代社会精神困境,以开放式表达为观者预留思考空间。这场展览是其艺术思想与创作方法的集中呈现,更是艺术家于时代逆光中捕捉真实,引发观者重新审视自我与世界的深度对话。
